Death by High Fever

MANILA, Philippines – A grade 7 student of La Salle Green Hills accidentally fell 14 floors to his death from the window of his family’s condominium unit in Eastwood Avenue, Libis, Quezon City, yesterday.

Supt. Moises Mabanag, chief of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, identified the victim as Justine Figueroa, 13.

Mabanag said the boy fell from the 18th floor of the Lafayette 3 condominium where he lived with his family. He landed on the fourth floor where a garden was located.

The incident happened at around 5 a.m. yesterday while the boy had a high fever, the victim’s mother told investigators.

“He must have been feeling hot and decided to go get some fresh air and sat on the ledge of the window,” the police officer said.

He added that they came to this conclusion after they found the boy’s footprints on the ledge of the window in his room.

“Our investigators found footprints on the ledge which matched the size of the boy’s shoes which led us to believe that it was an accident,” Mabanag said, adding that they have ruled out suicide and foul play in the boy’s death.

The victim, the police officer told the Inquirer, was last seen by the family’s househelp in his room, using his laptop computer.

Irene Fronda, 22, the maid, told the police that the boy asked her to buy him ice cream.

Mabanag said they were informed of the boy’s death by the condominium’s head of security, Phillip Mercado.

Mercado called the police after the security guard on duty found the victim’s body on the fourth floor.

Based on the report of Scene of the Crime Operatives who went to the scene, the boy suffered a broken skull and fractures in the arms and legs.

who would have though that feeling hot and opening the window could cost you your life? i think this really is just an accident and no one is to blame. it's sad though how his life ended just like that after 13 years on earth. i guess it really is true that you have to live today like it's the last, because really you never know when it will end. maybe his time was up, maybe God needed him already. the reasons we may never know but we do know he is in a better place now, up there in the sky! :)
