Only the University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University made it to the list of world's top 500 universities based on the 2007 survey conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement Quackquarelli Symonds (THES-QS).
UP was ranked 398 while Ateneo took 451st place. The University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University dropped out of the top 500, cutting by half Philippine representation in the list.
But UP academicians said the THES-QS survey should not be taken seriously, adding it was not a credible measurement and was mainly based on the "perceptions" of academics and job recruiters of a certain school's reputation for some 50 percent of its data.
Even an October 2007 study on the THES-QS survey system in the International Ranking Systems for Universities and Institutions titled "A Critical Appraisal study, the THES-QS" said that the THES-QS merely asked 19,000 experts to list down schools they regard as the top 30 universities in their field of expertise without giving any input data on any performance indicators. Those who were surveyed were not identified and the questions asked of them were also not given.
"Moreover, the survey response rate among the selected experts was found to be below one percent. In other words, on the basis of possible selection biases alone, the validity of the measurement is shaky," said Alicor Panao, information officer of the UP System Information Office (SIO).
In UP's case, they learned that the data used to measure their fitness were based on 2006 data due to its declared intention not to join the 2007 THES-QS survey.
According to Dr. Cristina Pantoja- Hidalgo, UP Vice President for Public Affairs, the state university had been unwilling to join the survey because THES-QS had failed to answer their queries on the basis of the 2006 THES-QS survey where it was also in the top 500 universities list.
In the face of UP's refusal to submit 2007 data, research assistants from THES-QS merely informed them that their failure to submit the information would mean that the previous year's data would be used.
"Apparently for the THES-QS researchers, old data would do - data that had been questioned precisely because its source was dubious. UP has not participated in any international survey of academic institutions since 2000," Panao revealed.
The UP SIO said that the THES-QS survey was also known for making embarrassing and unfortunate mistakes.
Panao cited that the University of Malaysia also complained why they were included in its 2005 ranking when they asked the THES-QS to delist them from their survey in 2004. - Rainier Allan Ronda/Philstar

This may serve as a lesson for us. If we're going to do something, might as well do it properly. Or else, all we get is criticism from others and we won't get a sense of achievement.
I think that this fact serves as a challenge for us to even strive for more and exert extra effort in our own edeavors. Personally, we should not think that since we are not part of the list, then we have no more chance of being a part of it. Let's take the survey issue out of the picture and let's encourage ourselves to do our best to further promote the name of our institution.
You're right, bdtq! If you are doing something, do your best with it so that you'll receive not criticisms but praises. And I strongly disagree that De La Salle University does not belong to the Top 500 universities in the world. I believe that DLSU has the capability to offer the best education a student can have. Animo La Salle! :D
It's not the school, its the students :)
Not all surveys are reliable, and this is one of them. If we want our data to be valid, then we should support it with documents of proof or such.
it's just a survey..
a survey is just a survey..it's not always accurate..and i heard THES-QS had many controversies..anyways, one shouldn’t be affected..
La salle is not belonged to top 500 Universities in the world? never mind, that's only a "survey".
kaya nga survey lang naman e
surveys are not facts. :)
hahaha well, these stuff really happen. lets just strive harder to succeed.
it is challenge us.
we have to work harder than now not to have a criticisms from the others.
But we have to show something to the others that we also can do that.
cheer up and do something!
Well, this is just another survey. We should reallly not take these surveys seriously, since each survey displays different results.
Oh, and don't feel bad about the survey. A survey is just some statistics created by an observant to record and compare data.
many professinal says that this survey in not to be taken seriuosly. because there have been other good universities that were not surveyd becasue of there recruitment cycle
