GENERAL SANTOS CITY - At least 21 people have died and more than 60 others are in hospital following a cholera outbreak in the southern Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat, the local Red Cross said Wednesday. The outbreak began more than a week ago among Manobo tribesmen in an isolated area in Palimbang town, said Marilou Geturbos of the Philippine National Red Cross."Many of the victims were not immediately given first-aid treatment because of the inaccessibility of the place," said Gertubos, adding that most of the fatalities were children. She said the Red Cross initially went to the part of Palimbang affected to check on reports that villagers were dying of starvation."We found out that the victims were afflicted with cholera," Getrubos said. The health department in Manila said it was still checking on the reports of a cholera outbreak.

Cholera is an acute diarrhea caused by bacteria. The symptoms for this illness are LBM, vomitting, and leg cramps.
I think that the infected people got this illness because of dirty food and water intake. There is a large amount of affected areas because cholera spreads rapidly. A person can get cholera through a person who is diagnosed with this sickness. Children are an easy target for cholera since they don't really know where the food they are eating came from or if it has been properly prepared. They just eat what they see. And also they are always playing on the streets, they might've gotten the bacteria while they were there.
Red Cross did good job on helping the Cholera victims. Good thing they were there to give them treatment. I hope that there is a Red Cross station with in the area so that sicknesses could be prevented and stopped before it leads to the death of many.

Cholera's a truly horrible disease. I personally fear cholera more than other deadly diseases because it dehumanizes the ones afflicted before finally killing them. Severe diarrhea and dehydration can actually shrink you, which is really terrifying,in my opinion. Let's just hope that a cholera pandemic won't happen here in the Philippines.
the way I look at it, for all the street children, all the poor people on the streets, they have a big chance of aquiring this disease. Its not that we mainly need the red cross. If we can help out these poor people with donations. they wouldnt have to drink water from the floods, wash their clothes from the canal waters, and wouldnt look for food in trashcans, then they wouldnt get this disease at all in the first place
this just shows the inevitable dangers in life. we just have to be careful, take vitamins and such, and remember that prevention is better than cure. :D
