Trash. Garbage. Waste.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/metro/view/20080705-146580/MMDA-can-use-Rizal-dump-for-6-more-months

There are two issues involved:
1. LACK OF DUMPSITES. Even if the Rodriguez landfill is not for the waste of Metro Manila, MMDA sees to it that they can borrow it as dumpsite for as long as they can. They request extensions when permits to use the land are already expired.

The amount of garbage produced by the people is increasing at a very fast pace that more places are needed to be used as dumpsites. As said in the article, there are 8,000 metric tons (MT) of trash produced by Metro Manila residents everyday. This is only a very little amount if the whole country's trash is to be considered. If nothing will be done to the mountain of garbage produced EACH day, more land would be turned into dumpsites instead of turned into something productive, resulting to improper use and loss of one resource that is a great source of income (because land does not depreciate).

2. REFUSAL TO USE WASTE AS SOURCE OF ENERGY. Joey Papa, president of the Bangon Kalikasan Movement, opposes the idea of "waste-to-energy" because he believes that this will only encourage people to produce more waste; thus, contradicting the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act that promotes the three R's and segregation.

By using waste as a source of energy, it does not necessarily mean that it would be encouraging people to produce more waste. They can turn the trash---in Rodriguez, in Payatas, in Navotas Ciy, in Pier 18 and in other places---into energy but not tell the people that actions are done to lessen trash. By doing this, people would not be told that the amount of waste is becoming less; they would think that garbage is still piling up, and they would try their best not to produce any more waste. Rodriguez Mayor Pedro Cuerpo’s “waste-to-energy” scheme should be well-supported by the officials, should be continued being done, and should be kept a secret from the public.

I agree with bdtq about waste-to-energy. Garbage is already garbage, so if you can turn garbage into something useful, then you won't have anything to lose, right? If all those huge piles of garbage are used in making methane gas, wouldn't it be more efficient rather than allowing the garbage to just sit there and rot for no purpose?

I agree with the fact that we can turn the garbage into something useful. If they would turn these trashes into energy/gas, well that would be a good idea. We surely have a lot of garbage and less dumpsites. We should also promote recycling and teach people how to segregate waste because there are still others that do not exercise proper waste.

yes. I saw a lot of trash in manila. We need some solutions for removing the amounts. It could be using for material of energy.

We should have a strict practice in making trash or garbage as useful products. Sometimes, people are just so ignorant that they don't realie the bad effects of such to everyone, and that includes them! Just a little training and self discipline, we can solve this problem. It can help lessen the trash we have today.

i think the root of this problem is the lack of discipline of filipinos. if we would just have discipline then the waste in our country would be more controlled.

we should know how to the 3 R's so that our environment will be much greener cause we have only one Earth..one planet where we can live on and we cant afford messing this planet up else we will suffer the consequences.

Dapat hindi isipin ng gobyerno kung saan puwede itambak yung basura kung hindi paano malilimitahan ang basura. yan ang dapat atupagin ng gobyerno ang mga proyekto na pangmatagalan.

Using our garbages to produce energy and keeping it as a secret from the public is a great idea. Keeping it as a secret from the public is the best way, in my opinion, as to not let them know about the solution in our uncontrollable production of garbage because not all people are willing to give effort to lessen their wastes.

Waste as a source of energy sounds like a great idea. It would be killing 2 birds with one stone. We'd have more sources of energy and less trash polluting our land.
