RP has ‘cheapest rice’ in region-GMA

GMA, in one of her meetings before diplomatic officials and tourism directors of the US and Canada visited Malacañang Monday, said that our country has an adequate supply of rice a "solid plan" to achieve self-sufficiency in five years.

"All over the world, food prices have spiked. In Thailand, [from which] we buy rice, rice is P56 pesos per kilo; in Vietnam, P67. So when we have commercial rice at P35, that's a blessing," she said.

"Our subsidized rice is P18.25 and P25 per kilo. Indonesia's subsidized rice is P25.30 and Malaysia, P27. Either we are all handling the crisis well or equally bad," she added.

Well as long as there are facts supporting her claims, i think our president has done a great job with the rice crisis happening in our region. She has done her best at maintaining prices to affordable costs. So props to our El Presidente for this one :)

Rice crisis also resulted from globalization. The Philippines is also the one converting our farms or rice field into other forms like buildings for commercial purposes or somthing like biofuels. GMA is doing a good job maybe, but I think she does not know how to manage our rice fields. It is said that the rice crisis did not really come from the over population of the people. Well maybe a part of it, but I think it is also from globalization since long ago we are already consuming more than our resources in rice.

Mura nga ang kanin, pero nauubusan naman tayo ng supply.

What rosie07 said is true, GMA does not know how to manage our rice fields.

GMA should just manage the price of rice better so that we won't have a problem regarding rice locally.

onga bakit ganoon? pinaka mura ang kanin sa ating minamahal na bansa pero tuluyan pa rin nagiging problema ang pagkaubos ng kanin sa ating bansa.. bakit ganoon?

Meron ba talagang rice crisis?

i hope that this project will go as planned in 5 years so that we could lessen our expenses in everyday living because rice is a staple diet in a life of a filipino.

meron ngang rice crisis dati, nagulat nalang kasi ang mga mamamayan na nagoutburst ang presyo ng minamahal nating bigas dahil sa kung anong reason :|

Rice has been the staple of food for a lot of Filipinos for the past generation, so lowering the prices of rice is a good solution for the people to gain more access to what pleases them. But like what happend, what's the purpose of lowering the prices if there is no rich to sell??

So it is good news for all of us So it means that we don't have rice crisis at all, this shortage is due to rice hoarding of the manufacturers wherein they wanted show the people that there's a shortage to increase the price of their rice.

I guess it's good that rice is the cheapest here in our country but it is not good that we run out of it easily. We have a high demand of rice yet not enough supply of it. I think the shortage of this should be the main focus first before the price.

I agree with the previous comment. I also heard that there is really no rice shortage in our country. They said it's made up since this is brought up by other countries.

The only solution we have right now is to maintain our rice fields. The government should also focus attention on this. Who knows, maybe someday, most countries would start depending on us for rice! This will be really healthy to our economy

I don't think there is a rice crisis in our country. The government officials are just being corrupt again and are getting money from the suppliers of rice. Since there is a big demand for rice here in our country the government officials are being selfish again and getting million from us.

our rice may cost least but why do we still need to import from other countries? i think it would be better if they make a permanent solution in our supply rather than temporary means.
