9 of 10 Metro Manila Residents want oil VAT junked

A metro-wide survey concerning VAT on petroleum products was conducted on July 12 and 13 by Ibon Foundation. Results showed that 9 out of 10 Filipinos in Metro Manila oppose to the 12% VAT being collected. They believe that this should be scrapped. According to Ibon Foundation’s analysis, through the removal of tax, the current price of oil will decrease by more than P7.

Despite this, the President still stands firm on her decision to maintain VAT on oil products, because according to her, this continues to benefit poor families.

If the VAT is removed from fuel products, a big burden will be lifted from the people. However, since VAT on oil is one of the main sources of money for the government to perform their projects such as infrastructures, housing for the poor, schools, social services, etc., this will have a great impact on the delivery of these services and the execution of the government projects. Before the removal of VAT is approved, there should be a reliable alternative source of revenues to sustain the government’s continued efforts to deliver basic services to the poor and finish government projects. In my opinion, instead of scrapping the whole 12%, the government should consider at least, decreasing it. In a way, this will both benefit the people and the government. :)

I strongly agree with the idea of lessening the tax instead of getting rid of it altogether. If we just lessen the tax a bit, I'm sure the gas prices wouldn't be as outrageous as it is now. I mean, you got to look at it as a good way to lessen the burden of each individual. By lessening the tax, it might only be 4-5 pesos difference if you make it only 10% or even 9%. It would help all of us and the government would still be getting profit. This should be implemented as soon as possible. I think President Arroyo should do this and think how many people she can make happy.

True removing the the VAT from oil products will reduce its price to the point that oil prices will not be that painful on our pockets but sad to say is that our president clearly said that he closed this topic and has no intention what so ever in reducing or removing the VAT.

Removing the Vat on oil prices will take off a big burden motorists. the money that should have been paid on Vat could be spent on food and other neccesities.

Vat surely is one reason why commodities are skyrocketing. But you should also consider the inflation rate we've been having for the past month. Take out vat and we still have insane prices, but at least not as high as what it really is now. Oh and in the sona that was just shown earlier on television, the president plans to utilize the vat to fuel her different so-called "strategies".

Yes. Oil prize is one of the biggest revenue of government. But, even though, government cannot build infrastructures, decreaing the VAT of oil is much more useful shortly. Save nation and secure welfare.

taxes is the lifeblood of our goverment, these e-vat does NOT actually provide development in a snap. i do believe that it really helps our goverment to improve, our full support in the goverment can boost it toward improvement.

Dapat lang tanggalin ang vat. Why would people pay vat if they don't see any imporvement happening in the philippines? Pataas ng pataas ang presyo ng langis at ano ginagawa ng goberyno dito? Dapat hawak ng gobyerno ang petron muli para hindi tumaaas bigla ang mga langis pero wala na. Binigay na nila ito sa isang company. In effect, biglaan na ang pagtaas ng mga presyo ng langis. i believe that it is alright to pay for the Vat as long as we see improvements in the Philippines but improvements are not shown for the past 10 years.

I think that VAT should not be removed. Even though it really adds up to our expenses, it helps our economy. It is one of the reasons why peso is very strong nowadays. And even though other people want VAT to be removed, the president will definitely not remove it.

It's just right that our president doesn't have any intentions in removing the VAT. As said in her SONA, the big percentage of the consumers of oil products are those who are not in poverty. So if the VAT will be removed, the benefit goes to the rich people since they can save more money, while the poor can expect less help from the government since the VAT is removed.
