59% of Filipinos consider themselves poor

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/star/20080731/tph-sws-survey-poor-541dfb4.html

Because of the non-stop oil price spike, high prices of goods, most of the Filipinos now consider themselves poor.
With the addition of E-VAT to the prices of goods, they became higher that most of the Filipinos are having a hard time
making the ends meet. Nowadays, hard work in a day + overtime can't even sustain a family's needs. About 10.6 million Filipino families or 59 percent consider themselves "mahirap" or poor, and with the current problems our country faces economically, it's no surprise that even if the family can sustain their needs but struggles to, they consider themselves poor. With the addition of subsidies that the government supplies, maybe they can be relief but only for short term. To improve the current state of Filipino families, the government must stop corruption and do something about it. Maybe not removing the E-VAT can aggravate their hardships, but it's main purpose is to improve our economy and help the people. Lets just pray and hope that the government will do the right thing and put it in to good use.

It is true that a lot of Filipinos consider themselves poor nowadays because of the very high prices of goods. I agree that even the Filipinos who can cope up with the rising prices of goods consider themselves "poor" because they are having a really hard time or they are struggling to sustain their needs.

The first thing the governement should do is to STOP CORRUPTION and this should start with PGMA. Then they should do something about the current problems the country is experiencing especially the rising prices of goods. I agree that the removal of the E-VAT is not a solution since this helps improve our economy even though it adds up to our everyday expenses.

What I would suggest to the government is that they should abolish the EVAT in gasolines. For the period we pay for the VAT, the government should pay a portion of the gas and in effect, there wouldn't be a drastic increase of the gas. In addition, prices of goods will not drammatically increase. I feel sorry for the people who call themselves poor because they have no fault in this and they're already having a hard time paying the goods in the past what more if the prices of these goods once again increase? What will happen to them? What the government should do is that they really should pay a portion of the gas that they earned from VAT and not only are they helping the poor but also the middle and upper classmen as well.

why wouldnt they consider themselves as poor? Most MASA eat only once a day. Most of them have no jobs that can support their family. and yet they remain happy. just an observation i guess since we just had our cwts last saturday. they are poor yet contented with what they have - family

@frosty
-well you just said that they are still POOR. :D

When do you think the percentage of the poor people in the Philippines would rise up to 80% or more? :))

I think that this is a very big challenge for the government. How can it support the increasing number of Filipino families suffering from poverty? I think that their feeding programs and the like are good means of addressing poverty, but is it really an effective way of totally erasing poverty in the Philippines? They should come up with more effective and efficient projects or solutions so that this problem will be solved as soon as possible.

Most Filipinos consider themselves poor, because they don't have money. That's the definition of poor. But what causes it is the fact that Filipinos don't conserve. They just keep on buying stuff. They don't think twice; whether they really need it or not. Just the simple act of canvassing is a great help, but most Filipinos buy what they see and don't wait for time to pass, where prices get llower.

We all know that life here in the Philippines is really hard.. It's good that there are still people who can withstand the fact that we have corrupt government leaders leading us, our economy is really weak, and prices of oil and other commodities are really high.. Maybe we're just used to it, so it's not new..

Poverty is really widespread in our country.. so it's no doubt that many Filipinos consider themselves poor, yes some of them may eat 3 times a day but we all know that eating 3 times a day is not really enough, everybody has their own necessities to fill..

Syempre I would say again that the government must do something about this (coz they really do!!).. They should find ways to help the poor and they should not focus on their personal gain.. mga corrupt kase!!

let's hope that there's still hope for our country..

I hope that all these E-VAT is really worth paying. Its been around for some time and quite frankly, little has improved in the Philippines. Filipinos are in a way just being robbed. The rich become richer, the poor become poorer. Some very unfortunate people who have little income cannot cope up with this. Sooner or later many people will be pennyless.

maybe if there's no corruption, 59% of Filipinos won't consider themselves being poor. 100% of the Filipinos will be happy. 100% will have their trust in the government. The Philippines will then prosper. its just because of corruption that the Philippines is poor. ang yea. remove E-VAT, it'll surely lessen the filipinos who consider themselves poor.

i think it is true.
lots of filipinos consider themselves poor because they do not have a abilities to buy that they need.
and sometimes not poor people says that they are poor.
because they cannot buy what they wants.
i think they should work to earn money.
to earn money they have to work.
but it is hard to get a job.
and also the laziness of the people could be one of the problem.
the government should open more jobs for the people who cannot find job.
