Should campus papers go online?

Source: http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/you/2bu/view/20081017-167009/Should-campus-papers-go-online

The news got me. I read the campus paper if it is convenient for me to do so. The other reason I read it is when I check the entertainment or humor sections of the paper. Other than those reason is out of extreme idleness or I was just too bored. I also spend a average time of five to eight hours on the internet but in my opinion, campus paper should not go online. An online copy of the paper may be posted assuming that a hard copy is published and distributed in the school. This makes the online version of the paper as an alternative whenever students or the faculty were not able to secure a copy of the paper one. Why? My reason is basically on tradition and common practice. Just imagine the feeling of reading a newspaper. The feeling of flipping through the pages and smelling the scent of it. It maybe unusual to consider this but we should stick to traditions. I know that digital version of the campus newspaper is more convenient and surely if you list down the benefits of having it online, it would be more ideal to post it in websites instead. I still stick to the normal system of campus newspapers.

De La Salle University has it's own newsletter which is accessible online. It is the 2401 which was named because of the location of De La Salle University. I think The Lasallian has one too. You can try reading it and see for yourself if all our university papers should end up in the world wide web.

I remembered listening to a radio station and the DJ said that the internet is a killer.

It started to kill the Library. Students now prefer to use the internet.

The post office is in its dying stage because of e-mailing(and also the invention of cellphones). We prefer the faster way right?

Soon newspaper business will follow the footsteps of the Library and post office.

The only reason that i can think of is CONVENIENCE.

personally, it's fine to have the campus papers online. A lot of people now uses the internet and if they want their papers to be read, the internet is a wise approach. BUT i don't want the internet to be a substitute for the paper.

I like it when i have to turn the pages of the paper one by one, and then folding it myself after I'm done.

I strongly agree with you.
Though the digital version of newspaper could be convenient, I'm quite sure there always be people who look for the original newspaper which made by paper.
I prefer books or newspaper or such rather than Internet, computer, or those electric machine not because I'd like to stick to tradition but I like the scent of the actual paper.

If there will be digital newspaper with the original one, it could be better than just having traditional one but I don't think it would be good if the digital newspaper substitutes the traditional newspaper.

I don't want to imagine the world without books because it was all substituted by those on the internet. I think that world would be too cold and unaffectionate.

I don't think campus newspapers should go online. Yes, it's part of the tradition and of course we should also consider that each student is actually paying for the release of each newspaper (included in the Miscellaneous fees).

Having it online may seem to be much more convenient for the production and it cuts down time and costs. You just need to paste it on a certain website and there it goes, it spreads already.

However, we should consider the people who are not computer-addicts. Some people read newspapers during extra time or while traveling. Like me, for instance, I read these Lasallian newspapers while waiting for professors or in the LRT, so if these articles are made online, then people like me would not have the chance to read or would probably be lazy to go online just to update ourselves with these things. It's not that important anyway, we have SC regularly updating thru mails. Thus, it would be inefficient.

i also don't like that campus news papers be online. and yes it's still better to flip the pages of a broadsheet. for me, its not convenient to read news articles using the internet, especially the long ones because it hurts my eye! too much time spent in front of the computer would really damage our eye sight. how are we suppose to minimize our computer usage if almost everything is posted on the net? it is still convenient to have things written on paper, it's more convenient to read and carry wherever you go.

I think campus papers should go online, because students would have an easier time if they ever needed an article as a source in a research paper. It would be easier to refer to if it is on the internet. But putting the campus paper online does not mean they would stop printing hard copy ones. We could still have our old news papers but this time we can also rely on the internet in case we need to.

For me, campus papers should not go online. Yes, the internet is accessible, and is fast, but not all students go online everyday especially, they won't go online just to read the campus' paper. Usually, they go online just to do some homeworks or have forums with groupmates. It is better to stick to the traditional way because we were used to it that way.

I don't think campus papers should fully go online. I think a hard paper copy should be available in school and perhaps an online edition instead of a full bloom online campus paper.

The campus paper is a university institution. I believe all universities of good standing have at least 2 or even more sets of campus papers. Its a way for students to know what is happening. Dessimination of information is also a good use of the campus paper. I believe that the campus paper becomes part of a student's life especially to those who want to know what is happening.

I also agree that the campus paper should not fully go online. Even if it is easy and convenient to access the paper online, we should still follow our traditional way of releasing newspaper. Maybe someday people will forget what is newspaper.

However, online newspaper is advantageous to get sources easily compared to newspaper because it is very hard to get previous copies of printed newspaper.

Making university papers online can be a target of plagiarism. Data on the internet is usually the target of people who loves to plagiarize. Also, it exposes to the public a reading material that should be enjoyed by Lasallians. What the university paper might contain may offend other people who do not study in La Salle

And I agree with you about being traditional and all but I think it’s because we are in the same generation that still enjoyed low-tech toys (like Barbie and Hot wheels). The generation is exposed to technology hence they want everything online and fast. I depend too much on the internet and in fact I use the computer for 5 hours+ a day and I don’t want another reason to depend on the internet.

I am against the university paper going online. It may be convenient but there are many risks as well. Also, it kind of ruins the concept of a “university paper” if anyone can read it. (Unless the site would require a student ID and a password then scratch my last statement)

i think pag nangyari yan, mas tatamarin na mga tao. mas ok na may hard copy tayong hawak kasi may kumpleto yun. it is convenient to read articles from the internet kasi click click lang pwede na pero hindi yun enough kasi yung information na nakukuha mo is yung general lang unlike pag mga books or newpapers, mas specific and complete.

I think it would be better if the campus paper goes online; because first of all, we will be able save papers, which is a way to help save the trees. Also, this could avoid the bad habit of others that gets a copy of campus paper for other purpose aside from reading it. Besides, laptops are everywhere in DLSU-Manila and there are also computer labs in which the students could use if they don't have a laptop; so it would be more convenient for the students and other people outside of DLSU that would like to read our campus' paper.

Campus papers are good if its online since it will save more trees. The only problem is that technology still relys on electricity and other factors to make it run. Computers hang also sometimes. It is not a very reliable sources. Online papers is a good idea but it must be very sufficient so students wil not loose their grades.
