KIDAPAWAN CITY, North Cotabato — Policemen in Cotabato City failed to serve the warrants for the arrest of two Department of Agriculture (DA) officials in Central Mindanao who were implicated in the killing of a journalist in Sultan Kudarat in 2005.

Cotabato City Philippine National Police (PNP) director Senior Supt. Willie Dangane said yesterday the two DA officials could have left the city after learning that the warrants would be served against them.

DA Region 12 finance director Osmena Montaner and accountant Estrella Sabay were accused of masterminding the killing of Marlene Garcia-Esperat in 2005, a columnist of a weekly paper based in Tacurong City.

Earlier, Judge Melanio Guevarra of the Regional Trial Court in Tacurong City issued a new warrant for their arrest after the Department of Justice ordered them prosecuted again following an extensive review of the Esperat’s murder case.

Before Esperat’s death, she disclosed in her column alleged fund anomalies in the agriculture department.

She named the two as among those involved in the scam.

Later, she was gunned down on a Maundy Thursday in 2005 in front of her children inside their residence in Tacurong City by three men who escaped on board motorcycles.
"They are no longer here in the City," Dangane said.

Members of the patrol team that Dangane sent to serve the warrants for the arrest of Sabay and Montañer returned to the police headquarters empty-handed.

This is one example of officials misusing their powers. In truth, such news are not very good to hear because it just proves that the justice system here in our country is very slow and bad, plus, it also proves that government officials are not efficient, effective and they want to silence the press freedom.

With this issue, I can say that although the court issued a warrant of arrest, they should have made some preparations like guarding the airports and ships, and roads in order not to let the criminals escape. Plus, the crime happened few years ago, why give the justice only now? What about the torture that the kids of the victim felt when they saw their mom splashed with blood?

Moreover, corruption really make people do evil things. Well, it's good that the news came out in the open for the people to see, but what's bad is the thought that the money intended for farming use or for the farmers just went to he pockets of these two DA officials. They're robbing us of our own money, rights, and even freedom of speech.

The government should take action as early as possible because they somehow manage their people blindly, not minding and not supervising them properly. All they think about is the money that they can get from tax payers. What else would we expect? If the head are corrupt, surely the followers will be corrupt as well, following the footsteps of their dear superiors.

I think that those who are in power misuse and abuse their powers. they don't really take their job seriously and take it as if they are just playing. if our leaders tend to have this kind of attitude then who will we follow? how can our country progress with leaders like these? we will only end up having corrupt officials again and again since we can't really shout what we want. others are pathetic since they thought they are not affected but in really they are, they just don't care!...
