During the rainy season, tomatoes become expensive due to less supply in the market. Tomato plants find it hard to survive when there is excessive water. This is why some farmers do not plant tomatoes during the wet season.
Because of this, the Tarlac College of Agriculture thought of an alternative to tomatoes. They thought of a technology called "Kamlong", or grafted tomato. This is a combination of tomato and eggplant, or kamatis and talong, wherein eggplant is used as the root of the tomato plant. They made use of this because it is flood resistant which enables the plant to bear fruits even during the rainy season.
A vegetable farmer, Remigio Esteban, said that he earns more with planting "Kamlong" compared to pure tomato seedlings.
However, kamlong production is only advised during the wet season.

Although Kamlong production is only limited to the rainy season, at least a new technology has been discovered. It is good to hear that people find ways to improve or increase production even during the rainy season. I wonder how Kamlong tastes and looks like, though. :)

galing. pati pagkain, hybrid na. tas filipino pa nakaisip gawin yun. nice. mas madami pa ang kita sa kamlong. makakatulong ito sa mga masisipag nating mga magsasaka. sana masarap. ma-try nga..
This is really nice. I, a lover of tomatoes, would certainly benefit from Kamlong
yea.. It is a kind of biotechnology. I just wonder the taste of it is good as original tomato. Anyhow, it is really good for nation to supply a big amount of tomatoes whenever they need.
nice breakthrough in biotechnology for the filipinos. this could be a big impact in our economy because by the time we could mass produce it we could export kamlong which could create more revenue for our fellow farmers
since kamlong production is advised only in the wet season, why not?, farmers should maximize it! since were in this type of weather and all.
And as long as this new production is all natural, without those artificial extras, and other chemicals, we should definitely go for it. Maybe it could be a new exportation product,
Well this is a good production in our country. It's good that there has been a new way to solve a case that has been annoying farmers for years. I say keep doing more and more ways to solve problems that we have since we have a great abundance of technology and many creative thinkers. This is a great idea.
Another product of biotechnology, the Kamlong. Hhhmmm.........
I just hope that this Kamlong will be spread out and become a portion of a Filipino meal. It would be a shame for inventors to create beneficial products ending up on display purposes only. I'll just hope that this product will be used nationwide.
