The reasons can be found in the cultural values and differences between the two nations are First, Koreans are highly nationalistic and feel a strong sense of unity with their fellow Koreans. In contrast, Filipinos have a poor self-identity relatively, reflected in a weak national consciousness which can be traced to the fact that the Philippines was cobbled together out of convenience of the Western colonists.
This divergence in values explains why the majority of South Korean OFWs, instead of leaving to work abroad solely for personal gain, returned to their country to build it into the great nation it is today, while Filipinos continue to work as the servants of the world in the name of self-interest, leaving their homeland for the enticements of other nations, in a concerted attempt to escape from the poverty of home instead of confronting and improving the situation. Is this a national character flaw that can be fixed? Or is it inherent of a nation that was formed for the convenience of Western colonialists and not out of any sense of cultural, linguistic, religious, nor ethnic homogeneity?
