Ninety-three percent of Filipino adults feel proud when the Philippines does well in international sports competitions, a recent survey of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

The SWS Sports Survey, conducted from March 30 to April 2, asked respondents, “How proud are you when Philippines does well at an international sports or games competition?”

The survey found 74 percent answering “very proud;” 19 percent “somewhat proud;” five percent, “not very proud;” and only two percent “not proud at all.”

The survey used interviews of 1,200 adults randomly selected from 240 locations throughout the country and divided into samples of 300 each in Metro Manila, with the balance in other areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Ninety-one percent of respondents called it “very/somewhat important for the Philippines to compete for as many medals as possible at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.”

“The more the effect of sports on pride, the more importance is given to competing in the Olympics,” the survey said.

Also, four out of five (82 percent) in Metro Manila, 77 percent in Luzon, 69 percent in Mindanao, and 67 percent in the Visayas are “very proud” of the Philippines’ accomplishments in international sports or games.

The survey showed 81 percent “happy” among the upper-middle classes ABCs, 75 percent among class E, and 73 percent among the “masa” or class D.

Due to the just-opened Beijing Olympics event, many Filipinos hope to see their fellow countrymen achieve great heights in international sports. And as for me, I would have to expect that these athletes would do outstanding as well. You see, we Filipinos feel proud whenever someone gets achievement. And it’s more than just a medal these athletes give us, but it’s the honour of their own country that makes us feel superior. We don’t mind if our batch of athletes is sparse and the funds are much less, we just want someone to win.

Bah. They didn't win a gold medal. They need to strive harder and improve their skills.
