MANILA, Philippines – Thick smoke from a burning building and foul weather made it harder for firemen to battle a fire that struck a commercial establishment in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Monday morning.
At press time, firemen were still trying to put out the blaze that started at the ground floor of the Good Earth Plaza at 5:30 a.m.
The eight-story structure on 447 Bustos St. corner Rizal Avenue in Sta. Cruz is close to the Carriedo Station of the Light Rail Transit Line 1.
Because of the thick smoke that reduced visibility in the area, LRT operations were disrupted for several hours, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
The establishment houses the Paradise Hotel, Robinsons Supermarket and stores selling jewelry and cell phones, among others. SFO2 Rodelio Nelvis of the Manila Fire Department said the fire did not spread to nearby establishments.
So far, the damage to property was estimated at more than P1 million. No casualties have been reported.
LRT Authority public relations officer Jinky Jiorgio, however, said they lost about P700,000 in potential revenues as a result of the fire. Some of their equipment were also damaged, she added.
Passengers were not allowed to get on or alight from the trains at the Carriedo Station as early as 7 a.m. due to the thick smoke.
LRT operations returned to normal at 4:30 p.m., but the Carriedo Station remained shut for safety reasons

tama k jan..dpt safety first tlg..=)
Mahirap talaga pag nagkakasunog, sobrang daming naaapektuhan.
Good thing no one died in the fire. I hope that the management will be more careful to avoid this problem because maybe more people will die.
First Baclaran was hit by a fire was it last year? Then Puregold libertad a few weeks ago. Then this in Sta. Cruz. Well fires can probably be prevented if people took safety precautions such as checking on wiring, gas lines, even candles. But, really sometimes its unavoidable and at least we still have heroes who put them out and make sure everyone is safe.
it sounds bad.
But its better that no one is dead in the fire.
but we still need to be careful always. Even before the happening occur.
The prevention is the most important thing.
Actually, their should be a victim if it happens.
it's a good news that nobody is hurt in this fire.
it's ironic. these months are the rainy season yet so far, i've read of 4 fires happening this past 2 months. haha..
