I just red an article about the Government proposing TELECOMMUNICATION companies to make SMS or Text Messaging as a free service in Sun Star.com.ph and also watched it in TV Patrol last May 27, 2008. Obviously Telecom firms opposed this government’s proposal since this would have resulted in a high decrease in revenue of these Telecom firms since most of the revenue they get is from the people who use this SMS service in exchange for money. Though some people might view this as a good idea, for me this is just the payback of the government to the Telecom companies since they were not able to exploit SMS as a source of income to the government by means of putting taxes on text messaging. The government just wants the share on the large amount of money these companies are getting. Because if the tax implementation on text messaging were implemented then the large amounts of money they would get will only be transferred to the pockets of these corrupt officials in the government. And since they failed to implement this, they did not want these companies to get richer. It is their selfishness and greed that drive them to do this. Not only that, they exploited the Filipino’s “ugali” of favoring to things that are free, “Mga bagay na libre” A common Filipino trait. They told the companies that text messaging must become a free service so that the masses would favor to their idea because they knew that these companies would obviously oppose this kind of proposal. My question is why would the government interfere in a private sector such as these private businesses, TELECOMMUNICATION companies?

These telecommunication companies will not make the text messaging service free. This will lead to a loss of profit for the company, which leads to the closing of the company.
Then the general masses would complain (again) because they could no longer avail of the text messaging services.
If they know what they're doing, they won't make it free.
Free text messaging? that would sound so good to the ears of most Filipinos, especially since the Philippines is a text capital. But honestly I am quite intrigued on why the government is asking of such requests from the private sectors of telecommunications. Its as if there is a real reason behind it, probably corruption? hehe what else? but anyway, for me the charges for text messaging is quite reasonable.
Making it free would have been bad for the company, losing profit. Probably lead to totally closing down the company.
Apparently, they won't make it free since they would lose profit.
Why not avail of the Unlitxt (and the likes) services instead. It worth it
This proposal is not a great idea. During holidays, people send text messages to almost everyone they know. It doesn't matter how much they spend on load, as long as they can greet each other. Millions of Filipinos do this, creating network jams that causes almost 6 hours of delay in receiving messages. If this proposal will be implemented, how much longer can we wait for a single message to arrive?
This is a bad idea, because the company who offers these kinds of services will be forced to close down, sonce the texting is now free. It would sound good for us citizens, but for the company, it's bad news. If I were the owner of the company, I would now think of other business which I can be involved in and have a good profit.
oo nga! of course these companies will not make sms service free. i think this is the bulk of their revenue. although it is a good idea , I still think this will not materialize.
imposible. pano kikita yung company kung magiging libre yung service nila di ba? kaya nga naging company para kumita. haha. ang weird talaga ng government natin. pero ayos kung mangyayare yun. i'll be forever thankful to the government. pero hindi naman matutuloy e. sayang! argh.
text can give multi-million of revenue to these telecommunication companies every month, so i don't think they would make this as free service.
I highly doubt that these telecommunication companies can make free sms and text messagin. They will lose all their income and you know Filipinos.. They can be abusive at times. >:) This is a bad idea and yes, it would be better for us but bad for the telecommunication company.
