Free Text = No Text?

A proposal to make text messaging free may force companies to eliminate the service since it will no longer be profitable to maintain it.

What the hell? This is the reason why we subscribe to cellphone companies in the first place. Calling people is a hassle and is too expensive for some people. Also, calls can only be made one at a time. Text messages depend on how fast your fingers are, a trait that is widespread among avid Filipino texters.

If you make it free of charge, companies will not be encouraged to invest in the business because it will not be profitable.

Then don't make it free. Plain and simple. Money may be a local issue right now, but this is NOT the answer. Cellphone companies will close down because they will no longer make money. This makes the money problems in the country even WORSE. Just don't do this. Please?

As long as the government has not filed a petition to cut text messaging or make them free, there is no issue.

Should the Philippine government file this petition, people will lose faith and rally. This may start another EDSA revolution. Think about it. A civil revolution for something as simple as text messaging? Just maintain the text messaging privileges, at any acceptable cost, and there will be no problems.

Please comment. Thanks.

For me it is just a small issue but they make it big issue just to cover up the real big issues like the ZTE.

I totaly agree of what the congress said. They said: "Why don't the Globe and Smart have the Unlimited call and text just like the Sun Cellular.

But it will be a big competition among the companies.

The government is experiencing all kinds of issues that are against them. In return, they make up all kinds of OTHER issues to divert the people's attention.

Cellphones and texting are becoming people's "needs" instead of "wants". As a result, people make the government's proposal---making SMS free of charge---a big deal when in fact, there's nothing to worry about. Telecommunication companies would definitely not comply with the said proposal for it is foolish enough.

Here are the reasons why it is foolish:

*There would be nothing earned for the services given out. If that happens, THE COMPANIES WILL OBVIOUSLY ENDURE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF NET LOSS. Of course, nobody would want that.

*NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE IN THE COMPANIES' CAPABILITY ANYMORE. SUN, who is giving unlimited texts and 4-hours sun-sun free calls for only P150 for prepaid users, is already rendering such poor services like hard to send out text & hard to call other sun users. If the companies were to make it FREE text-all-you-want, surely, sending out just ONE text message successfully would be IMPOSSIBLE because almost everyone in the Philippines texts everyday.

*Food, shelter, clothing and water, which are the basic necessities of man to SURVIVE, are not given out for free. Why should the telecommunication companies make SMS free when it is not even a necessity for man? NOTHING IS FREE IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE.

Therefore, people should stop worrying about having no service for texting. It is not going to happen. The companies would NOT let that happen. They are earning so much in the present and they are NOT going to close down because of a silly proposal.

Free text messaging?! Yahoo! :p.
But if this was implemented, what would happen to the livelihood of the business of the companies? And nobody calls someone from time-to-time unless, your filthy rich. Think about the owners. They could lose their business. Even if I want it to happen, I think they should just bring back the old unlimited texting services from globe. It's cheaper in a big way. :p

Though it would be an advantage for us,I think free text will not be implemented because communication companies will have a net loss. Also, the services will not be good enough. Compare the services of sun to that of globe and smart subscribers. As a globe subscriber, globe services are way better than the sun. I had experienced the sun's bad services way back then. Everytime it rained it was so hard to contact the other person.I just hope that the globe will lessen their charges on globe unlimited texting =D

Any form of unlimited text would be great. Just make sure the cost is reasonable for both the firm and the client.

I absolutely agree to what you wrote. Why not just maintain what we have right now?! This is a simple problem but they're actually making it big..

I understand that the government just wanted to make text messaging free to help underprivileged Filipinos, but they should also understand the fact that business is business. This is how cellphone companies earn money, and if they will make text messaging free, it will be the company's loss. So they can't do what the government wants them to do.

If the government will implement free text messaging, these cellphone companies will have no choice but to remove text messaging from their services, leaving the people no option but to use phone calls. Phone calls are expensive than text messaging, and many Filipinos use text messaging because it's cheaper and wiser to use it.

If they really want free text messaging for Filipinos, then I suggest that the government should establish their own cellphone company which offers free text messaging to all networks. But of course this is expensive, it's quite impossible to have such.

Just dont make this issue big because it's really pointless, just stick to what we currently have.. done.. :)

Hi. Telecom firms will definitely stay even if they give SMS for free. And besides, they earn more than what they should be earning...if you try to open our dailies such as the Philippine Daily Inquirer or the Philippine Star, you will find FULL PAGE ads of these Telecom firms...daily FULL page ads are worth Millions of pesos a month. Accoding to some friends in those firms, sending SMS to the same network will cost them nothing...therefore,if consumers pay one peso for every SMS to another network they earn around 40 cents and if consumers sends SMS to the same network, the firm earns the whole one peso. This shows that the telecom firms can give SMS for free, especially on same-network SMS.
The problem however, lies on the fact that we Filipinos use cellphones for SMS..we rarely use it for voice calls. Thus, leaving these companies to earn profits from SMS rather than from voice calls.

free text is not a geat idea since cellphone companies won't be able to give a good service to the people. Just like the sun. where in its hard to send a text message because of a lot of people are texting. This will only make this companise give bad service to the people.

In addition to what brayniel ong said, it takes a load of time to call someone because of the lack of signal in some places, and many people text and call at the same time.

actually it wont be cellphone companies that will be affected. its the sim card makers. such as globe, smart etc. i think free text messaging can and most probably will destroy those companies. since the here in the Philippines, text messaging is the primary use of cellphones unlike in other countries where calls are the main uses. This might be just another idea of the government so that they can earn more money.

I think the telecoms should just stay where they are and take this on a conservative route. They don't need to make more profit, they already have millions or even billions of pesos at their hands. Making text messaging free may seem great but think about it. A lot of people would abuse it and most likely there would be more threats to other people and crime rate could increase because of this. There are pros and cons of free text messaging but I seriously think the people would abuse this and the telecoms have a huge possibility of collapsing due to this issue or having scandals. This isn't a safe thing to do, it's actually a very radical approach. Just stay conservative on this and everything will be fine. The firms won't lose money and the firms will stay where they are. It's such a simple situation but many people are over thinking the cause and effect. The answer is to just continue to maintain where you are. Be grateful for what you have right now.

free sms messaging, can you explain where will these telecommunication companies gain their revenues? free sms might mean a higher call cost.

If "all texts are free texts" were to be implemented, surely there is a service that will be poor in status or hard to use service of a telecom company, like Sun. Telecom companies will also suffer great losses and maybe forced to close down. Who will suffer if telecom companies close down? The people or cellphone users will suffer because there will be no more texts

how ironic. just a few days ago, i heard in the news that in order to avail of the free text, you have to pay a certain fee.

should the text messaging become free, i believe it will reduce the revenue of the telecom thus reducing their efficiency also reducing the amount of taxes the govt receives.

the telecommunication companies will have no income if texting is free, we should be contented because they offered the unlitxt.

business makes profit..there’s no doubt about that..i think free texts are helpful on the side of the company because no one can avail the service if he doesn’t have a balance..but it is not helpful if the user use it in sending SMS to another network..the network he is using can’t get a profit because it is for free..but still, it can control somehow the user in using his cellphone..

It sounds good for the user of the cell phone.

In Korea, most of the people in the old generation do not know how to send a MMS. They usually use the voice call.

but here in the Philippines, most of the people are using MMS.

if the MMS becomes free, the companies will be going to ruin.
And even there will be no development for the better services.

I have to agree with the writer of this blog that free text messaging can keep investors from placing money in the telecommunication industry. Investors invest because of profit. If investments don't come in, employment opportunities wouldn't increase and none of the industries would develop.

I agree with slasher because for such a small issue they made it into such a big scene probably trying to cover or divert our attention from what is really going on

Its not so bad on the part of the users. But for the companies and firms who own the businesses, its not gonna happen. I think its ridiculous. Wala na maisip si Gloria. haha
