Arroyo term extension slammed

In an open letter titled, "A Call for Statesmanship for a Stronger Democracy and for Vigilance of Citizens," the BCC decried fresh attempts by Arroyo allies in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution and change the presidential and unitary form of government to a parliamentary and federal one.

It's so sad how the allies of Arroyo use the Constitution amendment for the pursuit of their self interest. I agree that the constitution should be changed together with our corrupt and inefficient political system. But the time is not now, there is a right time for everything. Amidst of the global economic crisis, these selfish, greedy congressmen instead thinking of ways to cope and survive in this turmoil, still put themselves into priority. If the constitution will be amended now, for sure, it will be another round of disaster because congressmen will only use it as a tool to prolong their stay in power, and thus not benefiting the Philippines at all.

I strongly condemn the act of these congressmen that uses public trust, money and power granted by its constituents to satisfy their hunger for power. For me, the newest attempt to amend the constitution is an act out of desperation. They know come 2010, they(Arroyo's allies) will have a hard time be re-elected due to the growing dismay and disapproval of the public. This act is a clear example of abuse of power and betrayal of trust.
