UK miner prepared to invest half a billion dollars in Surigao

source po ako.

MANILA, Philippines - A mining company based in the United Kingdon (UK) is prepared to invest half a billion dollars in a copper gold mine in Surigao del Norte, a move seen to create employment in one of the poorest Philippine provinces.

If sufficient reserves of precious minerals are found in the southern Philippine province, UK-based Anglo-American will immediately begin operations with its local partners, British Ambassador to the Philippines Peter Beckingham said on Monday.

Besides being one of the UK’s biggest mining corporations, Anglo American has a solid track record in responsible governance and sustainable environmental development, the diplomat said.

“Illiteracy is widespread and health care is inadequate in the Surigao provinces, which makes the new business a major boon for the local people and government. It is expected that an estimated 2500 jobs will be created and local taxes will rise to more than double the current level once operations commence," he said.

Considered as Asia’s third-largest gold producer, the Philippines is also estimated to have the world’s fourth-biggest copper deposits. - GMANews.TV

Good news indeed. Giving employment to around 2500 people will help a lot but we must also look into the possibility of our natural resources being utilized by foreign and not local investors.

i agree with you, gold crow. but still, many people will benefit from this project. many will rise from unemployment. though, UK will be the one having more benefit, don't you think its better if something will be done than keep those natural resources... lets say, natural. XD

This is very good news for those in Surigao Del Norte because surely, it can heighten up the employment rate and income rate there. Let us hope that this project will really be beneficial to Filipinos and may it not seem like we are just tools being used for their own good.

As gold crow said, the use of our resources should be taken into consideration when looking at this project because our resources would be consumed by foreigners and not locals.

It is good to know that investors still invest in our country, even though we have many political problems. Hopefully this will many families in Surigao.

good news for the surigao people for they will have more job opportunities. i hope this group will still respect nature and preserve the mountains. the government should keep an eye out on this group to ensure that they are following rules and regulations. i hope that this would not be a source of corruption.
