Tañamor - Possibly Philippines' First Olympic Gold Medalist

Harry Tañamor could possibly be our country's first Olympian champion - not unless there will be a "dirty politics" involved.

Our country is clearly abundant of a lot of talented boxers this world has ever seen. And we have proven it with the current WBC lightweight champion and no. 1 pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao. Now is our chance to prove to the world that we can compete with Olympic Boxing superpowers Cuba and USA.

Former Olympian Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco bagged the Silver Medal during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - our closest to the elusive gold so far. Velasco is very confident that Tañamor could win the gold; unless he faces his Chinese nemesis Zou Shiming early on. The host country is clearly on advantage because thay are at their backyard, homecourt can play a major factor.

Another factor hinders Tañamor's quest for gold - the "manipulation" factor. Last year, Filipinos were wiped out of the Asian Olympic Qualifiers because of alleged "dirty politics" that may happen during the Olympics.

Though disheartening, Tañamor himself sees this as a challenge, a fuel to his engine that will help him propell to earn the country's honor through his fists.

Boxing again? I think boxing should now be promoted as the national sport of this country.

But still... Go Tañamor!

Wait a second. Why Tanamor? Tanamor may possibly be a future Olympic gold medalist. But he might not be the first.

Let us remember that there are other Filipino athletes vying for the same prize. (but in different competitions) If Tanamor gets the gold, then good. But if others get the gold as well, then we Filipinos will surely be proud.

I do believe that this man can possibly win the Gold this Beijing Olympics. I have heard that he is very good and the one who probably has the greatest chance of retrieving the Gold. He is said to be very talented. But, Filipinos already have a record of being good boxers, that's why i hope we have a chance!
Go Team Philippines!!! :)
