DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines--The mayor of Agno, Pangasinan, was shot dead as he was playing mahjong with friends in a neighbor's house on Saturday night.
Senior Supt. Isagani Nerez, Pangasinan police director, said Agno Mayor Arthur Cabantac died from four bullet wounds after a gunman shot him at 9:30 p.m. through an open window in Barangay (Village) Poblacion East in the town.
Cabantac, 55, died while being taken to the Family Doctors Hospital in Alaminos City.
Investigators found four empty shells of an M-16 Armalite rifle at the crime scene.
Nerez believed the gunman trained his gun through an open window facing the road. He said Cabantac was the only one hit in the table of four players.
Cabantac's police escort and security aides were not around when the mayor was attacked, he said.
Nerez said investigators have been looking at political and personal motives as possible reasons for the murder.
Cabantac defeated former Mayor Leticia Rosete by 68 votes in the 2007 elections. His win snapped the Rosete family's hold of Agno politics since 1980.
Cabantac will be succeeded by Vice Mayor Jose Pajeta Jr., whose mother is Rosete's sister.

This is yet another sad story of political killings in our country. Once you become a politician in our country, your life will surely be in danger. A bad image for the country at that. Politicians should be the one who are to lead us in becoming a better nation. And yet, their lives are being put in danger and sometimes, even to its end. That is one crisis of our country that we should be able to stop, political and media killings. For if these can't be stopped, then chances of our country being a better nation will forever be a blur.
Politics. It's a deadly game.
Yet another fell victim to political killings. Truly this has to stop. Why can't they just settle arguments with words and not by guns? Mainly because it is fast and effective. It is their selfish greed for power and money that drives these officials to kill their competitors.
these things are really unforgivable. just to taste the power of being on top, you kill someone stronger than you. its just plain silly since it takes tons of effort to win and yet you end up dying, how sad this country can be.
