MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo on Thursday announced that government is considering pulling out the National Food Authority (NFA) rice from the public markets and selling it directly through non-traditional outlets like churches and mosques. The announcement came a day after the NFA admitted that it is studying the possibility of increasing the price of the government-subsidize rice, which is now being sold at P18.25 per kilo.Arroyo made the announcement during the Local Peace and Security Assembly held in Bangued, Abra. She said that the move was meant to deter hoarding and diversion of NFA supplies. The President said that the good quality of NFA rice now makes it passable as a commercial rice. She said that some NFA officials, in connivance with unscrupulous traders, had been diverting the government-subsidize grain and selling it as a commercial grade grain for a higher price. She said the government had caught some of these NFA employees which is why they are now considering directly releasing or selling it in the depressed communities with the help of the local churches and the local government units among others.“That’s why we are toying with the idea of stopping the release of NFA rice through the public markets…The temptation to divert has become too big as well and that’s why we are seeking the help of the LGUs and the church-based communities to help with that identification where to put the cheaper rice," she said.Arroyo said the tapping of the non-traditional outlets is part of there phased-action plan of the government to ensure food particularly rice security in the country. The plan includes securing the supply, ensuring proper distribution, and guaranteeing enforcement of prices to protect our people.

I think that this increase of price in the NFA rice is very unreasonable. The problem of the Philippines right now is not that our country is lacking in resource of rice but that the price of rice is very high. People cannot afford to buy such high-valued necessities therefore this move will add to the burden of the filipino people and may cause increase in crime and poverty. :)
