Bora Eyes the Use of "E-vehicles"

Aiming to be an environment - friendly place, the island-paradise of Boracay plans the implementation for the mass use of Electricity-powered vehicles.

Online news site The News Today reported that officials of the famous island resort are planning to phase in the electric vehicles by 2009.

Municipal councilor Wilbec Gelito already implemented an ordinance that would introduce the use of the vehicles in the island. He said that the other Municipal officials are also in favor for the said ordinance and has given him the go signal.

Given that the island-paradise is undoubtedly the most popular destination in our country, the implementation for the use of this E-vehicles will cure two diseases of the island; air and noise pollution. Tricycles in particular are the ones who are causing most of the disturbing noise and traffic congestion in the island.

This situation is a win-win for both parties. Gelito said that the public utility drivers could earn an additional P400 per day by using e-vehicles. An eight-hour charge could power the vehicle up to 120 kilometers, enough for several days of trip. Beside having extra income, they could help solve the island's problem and attract more tourists.

I agree with the fact that it could really help both the environment and the Boracay itself. This is very much related to my post about E-jeepneys. I think that the downside here is the cost of these E-vehicles,would it be as expensive as the proposed E-jeepneys? Where would they be getting the funds? Nevertheless, I hope that the people in charge would be able to find ways for this project to push through..=P

I have some different ideas on the e-vehicle though.

These are not that visible. Unless we see those electric jeeps roaming around the island every second, we can't be sure whether those vehicles will have a great impact on the masses or not. Well, I have to admit that these vehicles are eco-friendly. But do we see it? Are the traditional jeeps being replaced? Are e-vehicles roaming around every street corner? So far, I haven't seen any. If ever I see one, it'll be only ONE. (or two or few more) The e-vehicle has a long way to go before it becomes a part of Filipino culture.

I commented on the other post regarding e-jeepneys and I said that it would be very beneficial indeed. The long-term benefits of the operators are visible considering that fuel prices nowadays have reached the high 50s mark already. The cost of operating these jeepneys would offset the capital needed to start operations but I think the government should subsidize to ease the high starting cost of around P500,000 if im not mistaken.

it would be a good plan for the environment and for the tourists. but there are still problems like funding for the e-vehicles, these vehicles are not cheap. some are even more expensive than the gasoline types. another problem is that if it will replace the tricycles bigger roads should be made.

This will greatly benefit Boracay because these jeepneys will maintain Boracay's environment and adding more transportation for the tourists who want to roam around the island. I hope that these jeepneys will make it to Metro Manila so that the pollution would lessen.

it's good to know that the boracay will have the implementation of using electric vehicles to minimize pollution. I mean the boracay is one of the nicest beach in Asia and the people should preserve it. We all know that boracay is becoming filthy because many people throw trash in the water and locals there try to clean up the mess. i've already seen an electric car in boracay the one discovery shores uses. It's good to know that people are already conscious of their sorroundings. Pollution is not the way...

Its quite great to hear about this. A good way of preserving this famous area, such a hot spot for the tourists. Keep up the good work.
But one little thing im curios about, what will happen to those tricycles?. will those drivers be managing the new vehicles?.. how is that?

this can help the place in lessening the pollution. since we want to preserve and keep boracay clean and pretty, we should think of options to save it, even little by little.

E-jeepenys still have a long way to go before they can be claimed as beneficial means of transportation.

We should have to check on the visibility of the vehicles. If we don't see these vehicles, then it means it hasn't attarcted the attention of many.

We should also check possible situations related to e-vehicles. What if the jeep stops in the middle of nowhere? What if there is a blackout when the jeeps need charging? What if the jeeps break down due to malfunction? We should be able to answer these kinds of questions before proclaiming them as beneficial vehicles.
