Working in the United States remains one of the biggest dreams of many Filipino nurses as evidenced by the close to 10,000 nurses who have taken the US National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) during the first half of the year.
A report of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) showed that from January to June 2008, a total of 9,837 Filipino nurses have taken for the first time the NCLEX, the licensure examination for nurses in the US.
TUCP secretary general and former senator Ernesto Herrera said the figure was "roughly steady" just 107 shy of the year-ago takers." During the same period in 2007, a total of 9,944 Filipinos nurses took NCLEX.
Herrera noted that in 2007, the NCLEX was administered to 21,499 Filipinos nurses for the first time. This is up 42 percent higher than the 15,171 Filipinos who took the exam for the first time in 2006.
I can understand why they want to work in the other country. They may earn a lot of money, if they work in the other country like US becuae of their labor fee. Even, Filipinos are good in English. So, Language cannot be a matter to them. But I feel sorry about that country is drainning their manpower away to foreign countries. It could cause many problems in economy from the basic to the top.

to leave us here in the poor poor philippines. im happy that nurses want a better life for themselves and their family, but what about their dear country?

the biggest problem is that nurses are not in demand anymore... they were 10 years ago but now it would be very hard to work as a nurse abroad...
It is true that nurses are still very in demand in other countries and that they offer better wages for them there. But it is a bad thing for us here, because those nurses and doctors with real talents are leaving us for a better life.
This is not just an eye-opener for us citizens but also to the government. They are not doing anything to stop the brain drain in the country. I hope that they work this out now.
If they won't do anything about this now, then when? When all the nurses and doctors are already gone? When Filipinos already have a crisis in health?
Prevention is always better than cure.
These nurses are aiming a higher salary in US, to give themselves and their family a better life.
no one can blame them for leaving the country..they just want a better life for their family..this should be a lesson to our government of the problem..life in our country is not so good at all..they shouldn't also be proud of it calling them the new heroes of the country..this could just give a message to other country how poor and problematic we are..filipinos being force to leave the country for a better life and serving other nation..the government should do something..
Because of high salaries offered in the US, even our doctors study nursing to work there. We can't blame them because the only thing they want is a good life for their family.
it's disturbing that many of the Filipinos want to work in the United States. I don't know why people are proud of OFW's but in reality they really don't want to stay in the Philippines anymore that is why they all went to other countries. Our doctors here in the Philippines are well trained and after some time, they will already go to America. What will happen to the Philippines? All the remaining not so good doctors will stay and what will happen to the people who are sick? Don't Filipino people have a sense of nationalism and loyalty to the country?
i understand they want a better life but we cant blame them for leaving the country.because people need money to live or else they cant survive.
Many nurses leave our country even if they don’t want to work overseas. Yet they do since our country cannot generate the sufficient jobs. It is too bad that we see many families have to see their love ones leave just to work.
of course they may earn more than they earn here in the Philippines.
but if they go abroad for their higher wages, who will work for your country, the Philippines. I usually see the student who is wearing all white attire.
most of them are the student who is learning nursing.
I hope they also work for their country also.
so that they can help the sick people in the philippines.
I understand why nurses would want to work abroad. They get better pay and more benefits there. They don't have to worry about lacking medical equipment, supplies, or even beds; like what is happening in many public hospitals here in the Philippines. I think the government should do something to improve the condition of our public hospitals. I think that it is sad that many of our nurses go abroad because no nurses will be left in the country anymore. But, i guess that these nurses just think of what's best for their families. :)
It's sad to hear that our nurses want to work in another country. Don't they want to serve our country? Is it because of the salary? I think the answer to my second question is "yes", US has high salaries for nurses; maybe that is the main reason why our nurses want to work in the US. I suggest to the government and the hospitals to increase the salaries of the nurses so that they won't have to go to the US, and I hope our nurses will realize that they have a debt of service to our country.
