E-Passport

Good News to everyone! Starting December 2008, the best passport will be available to the Filipino public--the electronic passport, aka E-Passport. This new passport is aimed by the DFA to comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for the phaseout of manually processed passports, where the bearer's information is encoded long hand. The E-passport will also gradually take the place of the machine-readable passports (MRPs), maroon booklets embedded with computer-recognized biometrics and safety features for tamper-proofing. The Philippines, along with 61 other countries, will soon start using the E-Passport. E-passports will first be issued in October to diplomats and government officials but it will be available to the public only in December.

This new passport comes with a state-of-the-art 64kb microchip that will store all the information of the holder. Besides advanced security features on its laminated information page and individual sheets, the E-passport will contain the bearer's photo, fingerprints and personal information in one tiny chip embedded on the end cover page. This will help prevent syndicates from committing passport frauds. Also according to Francois Charles Oberthur, the company who will be supplying these E-Passports, the laboratory-certified imbeds use computer software that is "a little better" than other countries such as Belgium, Taiwan, Thailand and Kuwait.

Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Domingo Lucenario Jr. said the imbeds would provide "triple validation" of a traveler's circumstances upon immigration check as a port officer may verify the bearer's information on the passport against data to be retrieved from the chips and from the passport holder.

According to Lucenario, the DFA is finalizing the price and processing time for these E-Passports. Lucenario estimated it would take 5-10 days of processing time for these new passports.

For those of you who owns a green passport or MRP, no need to rush for an E-Passport. Your passports will still be recognized by ports world wide until expiration. "We have informed the international community to respect the validity of the green passports and MRPs," Lucenario said.

At last E-Passport technology is now open in the Philippines, faster pace in Airports and less hassle for E-Passports users. Can't wait to have mine. The problem now is how fast can you receive your E-Passport once you applied to have one. I hope this process will be fast but anyway this is very good news!

This technology will make authorities have an easier time arresting people with fake passports.

At last. A solution to a big problem that frequently occurs. This new passport technology will be very useful because people would not have problems if the airport staff stop and check their passports. Moreover, the problem now is how fast can a person get this kind of passport with this kind of slow service from government agencies.

I am so excited for the e-passport. But what if all the data in the e-passport gets deleted? :| That would be a big problem now, wouldn't it? I hope they have back-up copies.

That's a really smart idea. Fake passports will then be noticed. This may also solve security issues in the airport. But would everyone afford this?

a plus about this idea is the fact that it is highly secured (triple validation with thumb prints ad other necessary information) and it is convenient for us (the users). but one big problem that can arise with this e-passport is the funds needed to make this idea happen. Where will we get the money this time? plus, how much would this cost us? can we cope up with the expenses we all have now that everything is increasing?

mas mahirap na makagawa ng fake passports. kung may planong mang gumawa ung iba ng fake passports, kailangan nila ng mga advance na equipment.

isn't this kind of thing fragile? what about magnets and other sorts of damaging things? won't it damage the data?

im hoping that there wont be any glitches involved in this new technology.

my other concern is the charge that they will impose for the E-passport. hopefully the price is affordable for travellers...
