Obscene? They shouldn't be seen.

*SOURCE: Calica, A. (2008, June 4). Villar seeks to ban ‘scandalous’ billboards. Philippine Star, p. 11.

Talk about how much attention advertisements get from us. In fact, companies spend thousands just to get something advertised. Usually, advertisements are in a form of pamphlets or brochures, mall tours, shown in commercials, newspapers or billboards, and like.

But the issue here is on billboards.

From a variety of billboards, a great number of unethical images are posted for public show. Tourists and locals take time to look at these. As expected, people get “intrigued” by what they see and –-it’s a natural reaction; they can’t be blamed.

One of the people who has been disturbed about this particular issue is Senate President Manny S. Villar. He is scandalized by the “obscene” images of half-naked people he sees as he passes by different billboards on the roads and highways. His concern led him to introducing a bill to ban such billboards, the Senate Bill No. 2345. Since the government has the duty to prevent public nuisances, Villar’s Senate Bill proposed the Act Prohibiting the Public Exhibition or Display of Obscene and/or Distractive Motion or Still Pictures along Major Thoroughfares. This will prevent drivers on the road to stop or reduce their speed to look at the lewd billboards. Violators will be fined P50,000-P70,000 and, advertisers get a 30-day suspension of advertising permit.

I believe that the most affected in this particular issue are the children since they are to be guided in their growing stages. Hence, protecting them form skimpy and naughty positions that may occur to them something ideal is a must. Even adults are affected because this can lead to sexually impure ideas and acts causing sex-related attempts. If this will continue, both children and adults will see these as something socially acceptable and normal. Their outlook on decency may be altered.

Hopefully, Sen. Villar will monitor and continue his proposed bill for everyone’s benefit. His proposal is important in protecting human morality and improving public safety.

I agree that obscene billboards should be banned. Companies can advertise their products without using obscene images.
So, I hope that Sen. Villar's proposed bill will soon be approved.

It's sad that eventhough the Philippines have the biggest Christian population in Asia, these obscene images are being used as advertisements. I agree that they should be banned.

yeah, ban oscene billboards. maybe that's the reason why some get into car accidents. haha but seriously, it does not do any good to us especially for the kids. they can still sell their products without using obscene advertisments.

well yeah we just have to face it that sex really does sells...but we can actually change that mentality... i mean its so weird that some advertisements like detergent soaps would have sexy girls would be dancing in the background..its so irritating.. they should think of the consequences of their actions...especially the influence of their ads on children and teenagers.

It's kinda sad, really. They're really abusing the "sex sells" thing here. It's not like I'm gonna land a hot chick if I use the soap that some hot girl is shown holding on a banner ad.

If we're still proud of us being the only Christian country in the SEA, then we should stop this kind of mentality.
