Love your neighbor, FIGHT Child Labor

Click, click, back, multiply.com, STOP! Oh my God! "RP has 100,000 child laborers aged 5 to 9 -ILO". I asked myself, "Is this even possible? Is the government doing anything about it?". Well, I think the answers to my questions is a big "YES" and a big "NO" respectively.

Keiko Niimi, deputy
director of ILO’s subregional office in Manila, said that despite all efforts, the fight against child labor in the country remains a 'challenge'. I totally agree with him and we should all help in solving this problem because I think a day will come where all employees, jeepney drivers, factory workers, etc. will all be children.

Imagine, your son/daughter will wake up in the morning and you'll ask him/her where he/she is going and he/she answers 'Work', are you gonna be okay with it? or are you gonna start calling DSWD, Bantay Bata, etc. and report those companies who hired your children?

So what's it gonna be? Child Labor or Freedom from Problems? Only time will tell. XOXO gossip boy.

Even if the government took immediate action to fight child labor and trafficking, it would take years, and maybe never to stop it. With greed and evil inside people's hearts, do you think they would consider to spare the lives those children want to have? No, they wouldn't. They are just thinking about themselves.

There are quite a number of possible reasons why children drop school and start to work at an early age.

1. Parents pass away and there's no one to raise them. The offsprings are left with no choice but to earn money themselves.

Orphanages, whose main purposes are to take care of orphans, should be looking at records of people who died. They should look for the children of the people who died and let these new orphans join them.

2. Parents are unemployed or don't earn enough money to be able to sustain their family's needs and rights. The children realize this and they want to help financially.

However, from the unemployment rate of 11.7% in 2005 down to 7.3% in 2008 in the Philippines, it can be seen that this is getting solved and is probably not going to be a problem in the near future.

The fight against child labor isn't only shouldered by the government but it should be with the cooperation of parents. Everything about it will depend on the parents to avoid the happening of it in the first place. And if it really has happened, then it's on the government's part to save the child laborers. As long as people want to stop child labor, it wouldn't have to be such a burden to all. As the saying goes, "Kung gusto talaga, maraming paraan, pero kung ayaw, maraming dahilan."

PS: Is it possible that someday, even jeepney drivers would be children? Aren't children below age 17 not allowed to drive these kinds of vehicle? Just wondering...

Child labor will ALWAYS be wrong. No questions asked.

With that said, our government should give this problem more concern. Imagine having a 7 year old girl as your co-worker in a business firm. Imagine a 10 year old boy carrying construction equipment and operating heavy machinery.

Is this what our country is turning into? This needs to stop.

Nowadays child labor is a common problem in the country, As a result of poverty, parents send their child to work to have something to eat. An example are those children selling sampaguitas, those selling stuffs on the road.

Child labor is a no no for us. The government should do something about it. Child labor is likely to be hazardous to a child and interferes his education. Every child deserves to study. Work can ruin their health therefore it is not proper to have child laborers.

i think a solution to lessen child labor in our country is proper legislation and strict implementation.

but this is not something new, we see this everyday and it's just sad that the government seems to turn a blind eye when it comes to this issue.

Yes, evidently, child labor is happening in our country.

Sadly, considering how syndicates operate, the government will really have a difficult time addressing this issue. But, I disagree that the government is not doing anything. As a matter of fact, two laws are already in effect: RA 9231 (Anti-Child Labor Law) and RA 9208 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law). What the government must do is to strictly implement these laws.

I think it is also time for US to help deal with this predicament. What can we do? Report cases violating these two laws. And, help the victims of this kind of abuse. We can also help. This is also our problem, not the government alone. If we don’t start now, the children of the next generation will definitely be at risk. :)

Sorry littleredridinghood. I didn't know about that RA. It doesn't seem to me that the government is doing anything to stop this problem :)

By the way. Adoboys, just an update. The government is not doing anything to stop this. No raids, no rescues, nothing. I pity the kids.

What bad news, child labor in the Philippines go way back in the past but until now no massive action has been taken? Truly disheartening :(

Honestly, its painful to see a child asking for you to buy his/her sampaguitas or etc. We all know that poverty is increasing thus increasing the child labor. Some children work becuase they want to help their family needs right? Im kinda amazed by them because they have this spirit to help that they're really want to ease things up but still the government should do something about it. Children should have eduaction than working! Its their rights!

we should stop child labor, children should study and not work because every child deserves an education for their future.

Yeah, I also disagree with child empolyment. They are a hope and dream of country. They have to learn more things rather than working.

Child labor is unjust. Children are meant to play, study, and not worry about anything. They shouldn't be treated as workers and sex slaves. People take advantage of their naivety, thus treating them like animals. It has certainly become a sad world.

well, why do you think child labor is happening over here. sometimes, the children have no choice but to work, either because their parents are not capable of doing anything, or because the child is abandoned and needs to live life by himself.
We cannot just STOP these children, they are working for a cause, and they are desperate. There isnt much more they can do

Children shouldn't be at work, they should be in schools. The government should seriously do something about this. What they are doing is obviously not enough. Some children are forced to work because of poverty. If we solve poverty, we solve all the issues that come as the result of this problem.

Improve the economy, lessen poverty and maybe child labor will decrease.

Child labor is one of the many concerns in the Philippines and, most disturbingly, one of the most rampant problems we face. Every child has the right to the most basic of necessities in life like a healthy environment, formal education, and most importantly, a loving family to come home to. Yet, poverty hinders the child to any of these things and forces labor in farming fields, mining shafts and peddling in the busy and dangerous streets of the country. THIS HAS GOT STOP!
