SOURCE: Romero, P. (2008, June 5). More benefits for poor from VAT. Manila Bulletin, pp. 1, 12.
Filipinos: Alisin ang VAT!!
Government: Hindi pwede!
The VAT (Value-Added Tax) we have today is causing chaos between the government and the Filipinos. Many are concerned. I see VAT as something useful since based on how VAT was explained to me, it is beneficial to the Filipinos for the country’s development.
Now, Malacanang gives assurance to the local POOR that they will be funded through cash aid and other forms of assistance that came from the VAT of the 14-billion revenue on oil and power, which are currently the two factors affected by the price hike today. In fact, subsidies were already given just like for the assistance program (also for education), conversion of public utility vehicles, and fuel, all to be benefited by the poor.
It is great that the government is supporting the poor in their needs. But in a way, it is their way of doling-out. It is understood that by helping them, they can survive crisis. But the thing is, as the government provides subsidies, they will become dependent on these. Thus, “working for their living" won’t be their concern anymore. My other point would be like the Filipino in the conversation above. Basically, those Filipinos that can afford are the ones paying more VAT. If we delve on this, it is also the loss of those contributing more to the government revenue in the VAT since President Arroyo launched assistance programs even though some of the VAT’s funds are also used and executed in other matters such as road development, constructions, and other projects. To stress my point, I think they should also come up with other feasible projects that will benefit all Filipinos.

Many people today complain and complain about the VAT, because it increases the expenses of a person and we don't know if the government really uses the money for the benefit of the Filipinos. Like other things that our government planned to do for us, nothing good really happend or pushed through, which could change the country. It's still the same old corrupt country that we live in today. The government should show us signs, if they really put our money to good use, in order for us to believe that the VAT is a good thing.
I believe that VAT itself is good. The purpose of VAT is to give the government revenue which they will use to help improve the country. The problem now is that Filipino people can't see the improvements and in addition to that is the increasing inflation rate.
According to our FILKOMU class, a lot of Filipinos do not understand the concept and purpose of the VAT due to the language being used to explain it.
But, I agree that the VAT is a good thing.
only the corrupt politicians benefit from vat. they only put the money into personal use.
i must say that the VAT is important to the govt so that they will have more funds to work with. But too much though will hurt the economy and make the people's life more difficult due to rising cost of living.
